A holistic re-interpretation of the streets surrounding The Photographers’ Gallery forming a new vibrant public space and cultural hub for all

With the creation of the new Soho Photography Quarter we have enabled the transformation of a series of neglected delivery streets off Oxford Street into a vibrant, accessible and inclusive public space, which revolves around a free public outdoor art programme curated by The Photographers’ Gallery.

Over the course of five years we have worked with Westminster City Council, The Photographers’ Gallery and numerous stakeholders to establish a vision for the area that creates new public spaces for pedestrians that allow for art to be shown in the public realm.

The scheme builds on the distinct character and edginess of the area. Pedestrians were given priority by creating a shared space, stopping a rat run and changing delivery arrangements, thus creating safe and accessible walking routes between Oxford Street and Soho. Sustainably sourced and robust porphyry paving complements the existing brick facades. Where possible we looked for ways to incorporate tree and shrub planting to soften the spaces. Carefully considered wayfinding, bespoke seating and atmospheric lighting create an exciting and welcoming new city quarter that feels safe and welcoming.

The design of the streetscape and its street furniture was intentionally kept minimal to create a characterful, but versatile space that could extend the gallery's exhibition programme beyond its walls. With the installation of integrated infrastructure throughout the area, the public space was equipped to host curated outdoor exhibitions. The Photographers' Gallery is now responsible for managing a rotating art program that utilises the available infrastructure, which creates a unique and dynamic platform for contemporary photography.
The area now feels significantly safer, encouraging more people to use it as a convenient and engaging thoroughfare between Oxford Street and Soho. The result is an inviting public space that is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also fosters a sense of safety and community.

A bold, theatrical tribute in colour and form of the painter and opera singer Semiha Berksoy

Semiha Berksoy (1910–2004) embodied ‘total art,’ merging opera, painting, and performance into a flamboyant, technicolor life. Designed by Klaud, Germany’s first retrospective at Hamburger Bahnhof celebrates the pioneering Turkish artist's deep ties to Berlin and her bold spontaneous approach to painting.
The exhibition design draws inspiration from Berksoy’s colourful paintings and her operatic background. Reflecting stage design elements, Klaud incorporated mountain-shaped set pieces framing either side of the gallery, inspired by the artist’s famous Ariadne performance, carving out distinct zones within the space. These elegant structures were carefully crafted to showcase her artworks while also drawing the viewer through to a striking, large-scale photograph of the artist, a focal point at the gallery’s far end.

Set within a long, singular space, the exhibition, conceived as a continuous loop, encourages viewers to experience both the front and back of the set pieces as they are invited around. The open timber structure adds a raw, theatrical quality, enhancing the interplay between polished presentation and the behind-the-scenes elements.

Vitrines with smaller paintings are embedded within the structure enriching the return journey, ensuring an engaging experience throughout. The overall design maintains a sense of fluidity and cohesion, balancing the vibrancy of Berksoy’s art with an intentionally raw, unfinished aesthetic that mirrors her expressive and fearless approach to creativity.

Creating a home for contemporary art gallery over seven stories of a
listed Georgian terrace in London Mayfair

In restoring the seven-storey Georgian townhouse built by architect
Sir Robert Taylor in 1772 in Mayfair, we took the chance to correct
the damage caused by earlier renovations to the Grade II listed
building. Our approach emphasised the unique historical periods of the
property while combining them in a consistent way that creates a
modern, refined atmosphere suitable for displaying art, entertaining
clients, and as a place of work.

The lower four floors house the gallery’s public exhibition spaces,
storage and welcome areas. Above this are the gallery’s office spaces,
library and kitchens. The top two floors contain self-contained
          offices and further exhibition spaces.
Before the works the building was in poor structural condition
and tired decor. It required structural reinforcement of its
foundations as well as a complete renewal of technical services and
removal of pollutants. By clearing the basement from 20th century
adaptations it was possible to create an impressive two-storey
exhibition space within the original Georgian kitchen. During this
process an obstructed historic lift shaft was uncovered and
refurbished which adds to the many interesting features of the
          building.

Our approach to the project was centred around respecting the
historic character of the building. By carefully detailing every
material and surface, we created an environment that seamlessly
integrates modern technical infrastructure while maintaining the
building's unique character. The finished design provides flexible
exhibition spaces, improved visitor routes and accentuated historic
building elements, brought together in the building's grand, but
          domestic scale.

Planning and implementation of permanent interactive public art installation
Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist had a bold vision to activate the public space of the new Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen, designed by Dutch architecture firm MVRDV, through large-scale video projections.

Over the course of several years of collaboration, we worked closely with the artist to develop a permanent project that seamlessly integrates architecture and light. The installation harnesses the distinctive features of the iconic new building, while simultaneously paying homage to the surrounding landscape and public space.

The resulting artwork consists of a 16m tall sculpture crafted from steel and fibreglass. Its unique and humorous form is mirrored in the museum‘s facade. The ‘head’ of the sculpture spans 6 metres and houses two powerful video projectors that transform the outdoor public space of the museum into an immersive, enjoyable and embodied art experience.

Crafting this sculpture was a unique and pioneering endeavour, not only for our team but also for the local manufacturers and technicians. The project presented many challenges, from the need to create an artistic object large enough to accommodate all required technical infrastructure, to ensuring that it was weatherproof, maintainable, and safe in the public realm. To bring this project to life, we employed a process that involved 3D modelling, physical prototyping and full scale testing on site, which allowed us to refine the design and ensure its feasibility before moving forward with production.
